There are hand grinders at a fraction of the price. So when a customer asks why a Comandante costs what it does, “it’s the best” isn’t enough. This guide gives your team a better answer, and sets out which models and spares are worth stocking. Brewed By Hand is the exclusive UK distributor of Comandante.
The C40 MK4 uses Comandante’s Nitro Blade burrs, made from stainless steel and designed to cut coffee cleanly and evenly. Comandante designs and tests its burr sets in its own laboratory, measuring particle distribution so the grind suits high-quality coffee. Nitro Blade is also low-maintenance — it doesn’t need the special care that carbon-steel burrs do.
Grind size is set in clicks, counted from Click Zero — the point where the burrs are closed enough to stop the crank turning. Each click locks in place, so the setting you find today is the setting you get tomorrow. Because each C40 mechanism is built to the same calibration, baristas share recipes as a number of clicks.
At just over 600 g, the C40 is compact enough to travel and solid enough for daily use. The MK4 introduced a lighter, tougher polymer bean jar and a refined crank fitting and grind mechanism. Wooden bodies come in several finishes, each with its own grain.
We’ve supplied Comandante grinders to UK competitions for years, including the English and Northern Irish AeroPress Championships, where Comandante was the official grinder. The reason is repeatability. A competitor can dial in at home and trust that the same click number will behave the same way on stage. See how we support UK competitions.
“With the click systems from Comandante, every recipe can be exchanged easily with the number of clicks.”
— Mehmet Sogan, coffee sensory professional and head roaster
“The Comandante surpasses all expectations from a hand grinder… and it fits in your hand luggage.”
— Lisa-Laura Verhoest, UK Brewers Cup Champion and barista trainer
2022 UK Brewers Cup Champion Sierra Yeo trained on a C40 at 26–28 clicks for her competition V60 recipe. Read her interview.
Comandante UK’s own rule of thumb is simple: for a couple of cups a day, the C40; for four or more, or a professional setting, the C60. The X25 is the travel grinder, and the Lab Series is for customers choosing a burr rather than a finish. Its guide C40, C60 Baracuda or X25 Trailmaster: which Comandante is for you? makes a good hand-out.

Every Comandante setting is counted in clicks from Click Zero — the first setting at which the crank stops falling when you close the burrs. It’s a reference point, never a grind setting. Comandante UK explains the falling-crank test in Where is Click Zero on a Comandante grinder? and the quickest dial-in method in The fastest way to dial in your Comandante. Point new owners to both; it saves a lot of “it won’t grind” calls.
Comandante owners keep their grinders for years, and they come back for upgrades and spares. That makes accessories a dependable repeat sale.
Our Comandante aftercare guide for retailers covers what to tell customers after the sale. Comandante UK’s own care guides are worth linking from your product pages: how to clean and service a C40, looking after the wood, fixing a squeaking knob and why it gets harder to turn at fine settings.

Is the Comandante C40 worth the money?
For anyone who brews speciality coffee by hand, yes. Its Nitro Blade burrs grind evenly, its click system makes every setting repeatable, and it’s built to last for years with spares and upgrades available. Cheaper hand grinders work, but they rarely match its consistency.
What’s the difference between the C40 MK4 and the Lab Series?
Both use the C40 MK4 body. The Lab Series gives a choice of burr sets — Nitro Blade, Hammerhead or Tigershark — each with its own geometry, for users who want to tune flavour and particle distribution more precisely.
How many clicks should I use on a Comandante?
It depends on the coffee, the recipe and your taste. Close the burrs to Click Zero, count clicks as you open them, and use Comandante’s published grind chart as a starting point. Grind finer to increase extraction and coarser to reduce it.
Can the Comandante C40 grind for espresso?
Yes. The C40 covers every brew method from espresso to French press. The RX35 Red Clix upgrade adds a step between each standard click, which Comandante recommends for fine-tuning light-roast espresso.
Which Comandante spares can trade customers order?
We stock bearings, springs, washers, grind dials, jar and crank lids, knobs, cranks, bean jars, brushes, trays and bags, plus the RX35 Red Clix drivetrain and Clix Mate. If you need a part you can’t see listed, ask your account manager.
Should I sell the C40 or the C60?
Comandante UK recommends the C40 for a couple of cups a day and the C60 Baracuda for four or more, or for professional use. The C60’s larger burrs grind a dose faster and with less effort per gram, but it weighs about 1 kg.
