Similarly, oak wood has long been treasured by craftspeople and makers for being resilient, reliable, and beautiful — each tree grows in its own way, shaping wood with unique grain patterns and warm tones.

To choose oak is to embrace this natural diversity and to continue a long tradition of working with a material deeply woven into human history — made to last, and made to be lived with. We have always crafted our unique crank knobs from this beautiful, local material. But its strength and hardness has made it unfeasible to use for the iconic veneers on our grinders... until now!

Comandante is proud to release a limited run of C40 Nitro Blade ‘Vintage Oak’ grinders in two categories: ‘Classic’ and ‘Royal’. All handcrafted by our team at HQ in Munich, they boast the rich, deep hue of smoked oak — the knob and veneer in a perfect pairing. The
rare ‘Royal’ grinders all carry veneers handpicked by Comandante founder Bernd Braune for their particularly remarkable grain.

Paying Homage to the Noble Majesty of German Oak

There are woods that are beautiful – and there are woods that carry a legacy. For the Vintage Oak Series, we use the wood of old, wild German oaks. Trees that have shaped our landscapes for generations – often more than a century – powerful, unyielding, majestic.

Their grain is a masterpiece of nature. A vivid testament to time, endurance, and natural grandeur. These vintage oaks do not grow quietly or evenly. They grow with intensity – shaped by wind, seasons, and the force of their environment. And this vitality reveals itself in every square centimeter of the veneer: in deep, dynamic lines; in rich contrasts; and in shapes that ignore symmetry and follow their own, naturally evolved rhythm.

Birdseyes – the Rare Jewels Hidden in Wild Oak

In especially noble pieces, birdseyes emerge – delicate, round grain markings that can form in several woods, though in wild, old-growth oak they show their most beautiful and sophisticated form.

They originate when a young tree sends countless fine branches toward the sun. Those branches disappear over decades, but deep within the wood a trace remains – like miniature natural gemstones, preserved as memories of a distant time.

Sometimes they appear alone, sometimes in pairs – and on rare occasions, a veneer reveals a constellation of these eyes, like a small galaxy captured in wood. Their presence is as astonishing as their origin.

We treat this rare wood with utmost respect. Each veneer is carefully selected and meticulously handcrafted onto the stainless-steel body of our grinders.

Not to overpower the wood – but to let its natural dignity shine. To preserve the beauty shaped over decades, and to give it a new life where it can finally be seen, touched, and appreciated.

We never use any paint for our natural wood veneers. A special wood balm and countless sanding and polishing by our experts give you this honest satin surface and a warm hand feel. We love clean and healthy natural substances.

This wood, in this quality and with this character, exists only in very small quantities. Each veneer is unique, and each grinder is born from a piece of material that simply cannot be recreated. The result is a harmony of two worlds: the cool, flawless precision of stainless steel and the warm, organic depth of ancient oak – a rarity defined by nature, not by intention.
