How Brewed By Hand supports social-enterprise to train bakers of the future

At Brewed By Hand we love to support charities, community groups and grassroots hospitality events. Read on to find out how we support forward-thinking Luminary Bakery to do good in their neighbourhood. 

Who is Luminary Bakery?

Luminary Bakery is a London-based bakery and social enterprise that supports women from social and economic disadvantage to gain transferable employment and entrepreneurship skills via baking. Through their bakery, they offer work experiences, courses, and paid employment for these women, with the aim that this investment in them can help to break cycles of disadvantage, poverty and violence. They have won awards for their work, including Holly & Co’s The Independent Awards 2020, and The Queen’s Award for Enterprise: Promoting Opportunity in 2021.

 They have shops in Chalk Farm and Hackney; and offer virtual and in-person baking classes, which are held at their Chalk Farm workshop, and can accommodate 7-14 students at the in-person sessions at a time.

How are we supporting them?

Brewed By Hand is continuing its tradition of supporting social enterprises and grassroots training programmes by getting involved with Luminary Bakery. Brewed By Hand is helping Luminary Bakery by donating items for the shopfront and cafe section of the bakery, including equipment needed to make and serve tea and coffee, along with other crockery and essential cafe items.

Through donations of top-selling brands like Hario and Loveramics, we ensure that participants of Luminary’s programmes get access to the very highest quality equipment for their training. This also enables them to learn highly skilled specialty coffee-making techniques which will stand them in good stead for employment opportunities in the future. 

Brewed By Hand has long supplied equipment for many coffee shops and hospitality venues and we are proud to add Luminary Bakery to the social enterprises that we support and help to nurture.

How can you get involved?

If you are looking to help support Luminary Bakery and the fantastic work they do, you can always shop at the bakeries, online or donate money to them so that they can educate and raise up even more women with the important work that they do. They sell cookbooks, gift cards, and a London-based ‘mailbox brownie’ service in addition to their regular selection of tea, coffee, and baked delights.

If you are looking to get more involved than just a purchase or a donation, or want to know how they could support you; there are several downloadable resources on their website, including packages for women looking to seek support from them on safety planning, financial support, and parenting. There are also handy downloadable pdfs on confidence, goal planning and self-care that can be applicable to all women, not just those in need of help from the bakery. 

In addition, Luminary Bakery offer training programmes which you can find full details about on their website. The on-site and virtual baking classes that they offer are available to the public as well as those in need of their charitable support, so if you want to learn a recipe or two but don’t need the support of the programme, you can still participate, with the caveat that you give a small donation if you do decide to do so.
