Over the years, we’ve been taking action to reduce plastic pollution and its impacts generated across our supply chain. As a part of the Think Better Group, we are working together to deliver environmental sustainability and have aligned with their ESG strategy particularly around plastic reduction.
Our goal is ultimately to minimise the use of finite resources, aiming to use sustainably sourced renewable or recycled materials. We are aware the transition will not be instant, but with a defined strategy that outlines specific and measurable goals, the impact can be greatly reduced.
Specifically, we have taken the following steps within our brands and suppliers to remove plastic from our supply chain and work towards establishing ourselves as positive contributors to the environment.
Our warehouse has all but eradicated all single use plastics from our supply chain. The only outstanding items we are working with them on is removing the bubble wrap on electrical adaptors & Loveramics singles. The warehouse is the hub of our supply chain, and they are certified with ISO 9001*, ISO 14001* and are EcoVadis* Silver approved.
Moving forward, we are currently engaged in a dialogue with all our suppliers to encourage them to minimise the use of virgin single use plastic and to implement waste prevention strategies.
Furthermore, we have worked tirelessly with our core brand Hario to pilot a range of best-selling products which have completely eradicated plastic from these items. We launched the Hario Bloom Range in 2021 to a great reception from our partners and end customers alike and plan to roll this out further with Hario in 2023.
In addition to the Bloom range, we have brought to market two additional filter paper products which similarly have disposed of plastic internal wraps. These include the V60 Coffee Filter Papers Size 02 and our bespoke filter papers designed with Project Waterfall to fund their projects bringing safe water supply and sanitation to coffee communities in Ethiopia. Hario’s filter papers are Forest Stewardship Council (FSC)* certified.
We have continued our work in eliminating plastic from our suite of brands through Wilfa’s removal of single use plastic bags within their product packaging. They have moved almost in full to utilising fully home compostable protective bags in their coffee and kitchen ranges. Additionally, Wilfa’s packaging is made from Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) certified wood pulp and is Eco-Lighthouse* certified. One item that is still being worked on however is a solution to the polystyrene protective cases that many of the items are housed in.
By Q4 2022, the teams at Brewed by Hand and Loveramics will have worked to eradicate all single use plastics from both trade and retail packages. This has been a high priority for our teams throughout the year and we are confident in our ability to provide both segments of consumers more sustainably packaged products.
One of the reasons we love working with Comandante is the fact that their packaging has never included single use plastics. We are proud to supply our customers with and support a brand that prioritises performance and positive environmental impact.
In addition to reducing our plastic footprint, each of our brands has individual initiatives to improve their use of energy, water, and power.
We understand that the journey towards sustainability goes beyond plastic neutrality is a continuous development and we will drive this agenda with each of our suppliers, partners, and brands.
